Bikers
Welcome!
"The Winding Stair" it was called in the old days, a steep zig-zagging climb from
Morganton in the foothills up to the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It's known
as highway 181 these days but bikers on this mean, side-winding stretch of blacktop
like to call it by its older name.
With approximately 25 miles of many challenging curves and a rise in elevation of 2800
feet, the Winding Stairs give you awesome views of the gigantic granite profiles of
Table Rock and Hawksbill mountains as it passes by one of the three popular overlooks
for viewing the mysterious Brown Mountain Lights. Traveling north, Grandfather Mountain
will appear in the distance. There are handy mile markers and passing lanes on this stretch for speed or leisure riding.
A Civil War skirmish was fought on this road in June 1864 when the Burke Co. Home
Guard chased the marauding Union Captain George Kirk back into East Tennessee.
But the dangers on this road are far from over.
Cresting the mountain you pass through an area known as Ripshin Ridge, notorious for
its fierce winds yet acclaimed for it's sweeping panoramas. North of Ripshin Ridge you
can enter on to the Blue Ridge Parkway from highway 181 at Pineola.
At the nearby Linville Falls Lodge we have heard many tales of the trills of Winding Stairs
Road from the bikers we have welcomed and hosted over the years. Come take shelter
from the weather, rest, and relax. We are located in the village of Linville Falls,
NC at the
intersection of highways 221 and 183. You can reach us by turning left off highway 181
(the Winding Stairs) onto highway 183, a four -mile road that takes you into Linville Falls,
NC
and the hospitality of the Lodge.
We invite you to stay with us, to dine at our Spear's
BBQ and Grill, quench your thirst, and share with us your experiences of the open road.
